This article describes this new compressor technology and its first hydraulic use in an ARI-certified chiller design.THE BEARINGSTraditional centrifugal compressors use roller bearings and hydrodynamic bearings, both of which consume power and require oil and a lubrication system. Recently, ceramic portable roller bearings, which avoid issues related to oil and reduce power consumption, were introduced to the HVAC industry. A digitally controlled magnetic-bearing system, consisting of both permanent magnets and electromagnets, replaces conventional lubricated bearings. However, because not all hydrants appear pumps accurately on department maps, the real purpose of the exercise is sometimes hydraulic to familiarize firefighters with hydrant locations. Data collected by the system is fed into the fire department''s preplan software to help with fire suppression scenarios. The data also is used by public works to identify hydrants that portable may be out of service for line repairs. That information is relayed to dispatchers so that the preplan scenarios can be updated automatically pumps by fire department software.
